Day 1:
Etna
Volcano Jeep ride with lunch in a local farmhouse
Today
departure by jeep to Etna Volcano:
we will experience what
the Greeks called "the realm of Vulcan (god of fire)" by Jeep,
viewing along the way: Mount Fontana (view
of Bove Valley), the Thieves Cave (grotta dei ladroni),
extinct craters of Sartorius Mounts, and the lava flow from the
2002 eruption. Indulge in a lunch in a typical farmhouse tasting
Sicilian dishes such as olives, cheese, grilled vegetables, pasta and
dessert. During the afternoon, off-road drive along the
Linguaglossa-Castiglione and Alcantara Gorges. Short visit to
the Canyon entrance. Later back to
Taormina (L)
Day 2: Taormina/Piazza
Armerina/Agrigento/Palermo
Today you will meet the
Driver and drive across the vast countryside showcasing Sicily’s
great variety of sceneries. We will arrive in Piazza Armerina for an independent visit
of the ruins of the Roman Villa of Casale. The mosaics
discovered here are celebrated among scholars of antiquity. This afternoon
we will continue to
Agrigento, whose
history dates back to 580 BC. Independent tour of the Valley of the
Temples, a magnificent cluster of Greek ruins overlooking the
Mediterranean Sea. Afterward, we drive to Palermo, the
capital of Sicily.
Day 3: Monreale & Palermo
Cooking Course with Donna Franca
This
morning we will visit where the Arab-Norman art and architecture
reached the pinnacle of its glory with the Monreale Duomo, launched in
1174 by William II. Scenes from the Old and New Testaments are
depicted in golden mosaics covering the interior. Then on to Palermo
to Donna Franca's home.
Upon
arrival a brief recipe introduction, then start the Cooking
Cultural Exchange:
everybody will have 1 small egg, 100 gr
(4/5 cup) White flour and ¼ tsp salt ... put the flour in a mound on
the table...create a crater in the top of the flour mound and add the
egg(s) and salt...knead until the dough is compact and well
mixed....be careful not to overwork the dough....then wrap the dough
in a towel (otherwise it will become too dry and difficult to work
with)....prepare your Ricotta Cheese filling....two hours later ....
the ravioli are ready to cook! Fill a large pot with water and salt
well....when water boils, add the ravioli and a spoon of olive oil (to
prevent the pasta from sticking together)....fresh, handmade pasta
requires only about 10 minutes to cook....once pasta is cooked, drain
it using a strainer...now plate the ravioli and dress it with fresh
tomato sauce, parmesan cheese, and fresh basil leafs. BUON APPETITO!
This afternoon at leisure to visit Palermo on your own (or ask us for
an half day Palermo citysightseeing) (L)
